About

History of EDUPHILUSA

EDUPHIL was founded in 2020 by Dr. Sheilachu P. Gomez (Ching), Ms. Erlinda Munsayac (Lynda), and the late Dr. Robert Woodruff (Bob). Ching had spent more than two decades donating books to schools in her hometown, while Lynda supported educational initiatives in her own community. Bob, a retired University of Florida entomologist and gemologist with FDACS-DPI, was deeply moved by the lack of libraries he witnessed during visits to the Philippines. As a long-time volunteer with the Alachua Friends of the Library, he was troubled by the large number of valuable books discarded after sales and proposed redirecting them to schools overseas. With this shared vision, the three founded EDUPHIL as a nonprofit to give Philippine students greater access to learning resources.

Their efforts began modestly in 2020–2021, sending 15 boxes of books to four provinces. With growing support from the Filipino community, local businesses, and private donors—and with tax-exempt status approved in 2023—the organization rapidly expanded, shipping 45 boxes of books in that year alone. Since its establishment, EDUPHIL has also been guided by dedicated leaders who have shaped its growth. Founding president Dr. Robert Woodruff served in 2021, bringing his passion for education and volunteer experience to the role. He was followed by Dr. Edgardo Apolinar in 2022, who broadened the organization’s reach, and by Dr. Manny Palada in 2023, who advanced new initiatives and partnerships. Today, under the leadership of Mr. Emiliano Pata, Jr., EDUPHIL continues to grow, pursuing ambitious goals with a strong commitment to educational excellence and access in the Philippines.

President’s Message

I hope this message finds you all in good health and spirits…
I am honored to lead and excited for the opportunity to serve as President of Educational Outreach to the
Philippines (EDUPHIL, INC.) for the duration of my term. As we look forward to the future of this non-profit
organization, I am filled with hope and enthusiasm, for the impact we can continue to make on the
educational landscape in the Philippines. Our mission to provide educational resources and support to
schools remains at the forefront of our efforts, and we have exciting plans to expand our reach and deepen
our impact.

Establishing and Supporting Local Libraries One of our key goals is to establish and support local
libraries in underserved areas. By providing access to a wide range of books and other educational
materials, we can foster a love of reading and learning among students. These libraries will serve as
community hubs, offering resources and programs that encourage literacy and educational development.

Sponsoring Scholarships for Needy Schoolchildren We recognize that financial barriers can prevent
many talented and deserving students from pursuing their educational dreams. To address this, we aim to
sponsor scholarships for needy schoolchildren, ensuring they can receive a quality education and achieve
their full potential. These scholarships will cover tuition fees, school supplies, and other essential expenses.

Supporting School Projects In addition to providing books, educational materials, and scholarships, we
are committed to supporting various school projects that enhance the overall educational experience like:
Reading Programs Initiatives to promote literacy and a love of reading among students.

Teacher Enhancement Programs Professional development opportunities for teachers to improve their skills
and teaching methods.

Skills Development Programs Training programs focused on sustainability, good citizenship, and practical
skills that prepare students for future success.

Looking ahead, with continued support from our growing membership, generous donations from
businesses and individuals, and the dedication of our volunteers, I am confident that we can achieve these
ambitious goals. I really believe that every one of us has charity in our heart and can give. And it is not how
much we give but how much love we put into giving.

Once again, thank you for your unwavering support, partnership, and friendship. Together, we can make it
happen…

Sincerely,
Emiliano Pata Jr.
